Entering therapy for the first time can be a significant step towards addressing personal challenges and fostering mental well-being. Understanding what to expect from your initial session can alleviate worry and anxiety around the therapeutic process. I've highlighted a few parts of what you can expect during your first visit with me.
Introduction and Relationship Building: The initial therapy session is largely dedicated to getting acquainted with one another and establishing a foundation for the therapeutic relationship. We will introduce ourselves, I'll outline the framework of therapy, and review confidentiality and other aspects of consenting to therapy.
History Taking: In addition to being the foundation for the therapeutic relationship, the initial session involves gathering detailed information about your personal history. This part of the process allows me to gain insight into your background, experiences, and current circumstances. I'll also ask about any motivators for engaging in therapy at this time. Understanding past experiences, traumas, current motivation, support system, etc. assists in informing your specific treatment plan. Overall, a holistic assessment lays the groundwork for a nuanced understanding of your unique needs and assists in identifying targeted interventions.
Session Preparation and Prioritization: I believe that the most effective therapy is collaborative. Prior to attending our initial session, I would encourage you to reflect on your experiences, identify areas of concern, and consider specific goals you would like to address. Coming prepared with a mental (or written) inventory of priorities can support development of your treatment plan and help us to prioritize and move towards your goals.
The journey of therapy allows us to explore your past, your current circumstances, and future goals. Know that the therapeutic process is centered on building rapport, sharing personal history, and collaboratively prioritizing concerns and goals before moving towards active processing and/or intervention. By participating in the therapeutic process and coming prepared with a sense of direction, you can join in collaboration and begin to shift towards enhanced well-being and personal growth.
I look forward to meeting you!
