Sesame Street's very own Elmo posed this question on his social media platforms in January of this year. The response to this question was overwhelming. His post and its candid responses garnered attention across various forms of media, including The Todays Show, NPR, CNN, The Washington Post, and FOX News, among others.
As of today, Elmo's Instagram post has over 77,000 likes and almost 6,000 responses
His post on X (formerly Twitter) has over 15,000 reposts, 165,000 likes, and 218 million (!!!) views.
The response to Elmo’s question highlighted information of which we were already aware: mental health matters and many are struggling.
1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year.
Only 47.2% of U.S. adults with mental illness received treatment in 2021.
1 in 20 U.S. adults experience serious mental illness each year.
Only 65.4% of U.S. adults with serious mental illness received treatment in 2021.
1 in 6 U.S. youth have a mental health condition, but only half receive treatment.
50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24.
In the spirit of Mental Health Awareness Month, I challenge you to check in with yourself.
How are you really doing?
Taking care of your mental health is just as important as caring for your physical health and seeking support is a courageous act!
